STEM Exposition, 2014
A tabletop simulation is developed for middle school students in order to demonstrate concepts behind volcanoes, faults, stratification, and segregation.

Pattern Formation in Fluid Injection into a Dense Granular Medium

Sponsors: Schlumberger, Itasca, ACS PRF, NSF
A series of physical experiments in a Hele-Shaw cell-like configuration have been conducted to verify such the conceptual hypothesis that in the regimes beyond injection permeation, there must exist a transition from the solid-like response in the… Read more

DEM Analysis of Using the Scratch Test to Probe Rock Heterogeneity

Sponsors: Schlumberger
Students: Yifei Ma
Geoshanghai Exposition, 2014
In this work, the scratch test is modeled numerically using the distinct element method (DEM) to better understand: 1) the effect of the cutting velocity on the failure mode, 2) the connection between the characteristics of the force signals and the failure modes, 3) the feasibility of using the scratch test to probe rock heterogeneity.
